The Oxygen Index is a quality control test of combustible materials. Its ease of use together with high levels of precision has made this technique a primary characterizing and quality control. The technique measures the minimum percentage of oxygen in the test atmosphere that is required to marginally support combustion. The oxygen tester is used to check combustion of plastic materials such as polymers, cables, rubber, nylon, laminates, fabrics etc. The advanced LOI Limiting Oxygen Index Tester accurately determines the relative flammability of plastics and other materials. It conforms to ASTM D2863 and ISO 4589-1, ISO 4589-2 standards and provides a means for safely determining the relative flammability of materials by measuring the minimum oxygen concentration that will support combustion. The test specimens are burned in a precisely controlled atmosphere of nitrogen and oxygen. The operator adjusts the supply gases and uses the flowmeter readings to calculate the oxygen index.
ISO 4589-2 and ASTM D2863, gives the procedure for determination of Limited oxygen index of materials.
ISO 4589 specifies methods for determining the minimum concentration of oxygen, in added mixture with nitrogen, that will support combustion of small vertical test specified test conditions The results are defined as oxygen index values.
